The Magistretti archive contains roughly 30,000 sketches and technical drawings, 7,000 photographs, 3,000 documents and a collection of models and prototypes, viz. documentation and objects produced by the studio over a period in time stretching from 1946 to 2006. In 2007 the Lombardy Superintendent’s Office for Archives declared the fund to be of special historical importance, acknowledging its cultural value and placing it under special protection.
The archive is composed of units originally kept in various different rooms and containers at the firm, with different types of documents and props.
The units come in two main categories of topics: architecture and design.
Studio Magistretti, which is responsible for creating the archive, chose to arrange the units of architectural projects under the heading project, the units of design projects under the heading producer, and the remaining mainly managerial and administrative part under the heading client. Each individual unit is basically composed of one type of material but not exclusively so, for example administrative papers, project reports or letters may also be enclosed with sketches.
The charting, rearranging and stocktaking operations (the latter carried out using Sesamo software) took a couple of years’ work, resulting in the creation of a database of approximately 3,000 units.
At the end of this phase, the fund was arranged into five sets: Drawings, Photographs and Editorials, Documents, Models and Prototypes. The archive is not, therefore, hierarchically arranged according to a project-based logic, but reflects the order of the papers and uses projects just as an access key, in accordance with the original arrangement and with what emerged after studying the papers themselves.
The chronological ordering and project-charts found in this section have been created from the inventorial database; the drawings and pictures it contains come from the digitalisation campaign carried out at the same time as stocktaking, which has so far covered approximately a quarter of the archive.
A more extensive version of the chronological ordering can be accessed at the headquarters of the foundation and contains a greater number of high-definition images with no watermarks.
